Welcome to Key of Liberty 2021!

Hello everyone! Our first day of class went really well, and we're off to a great start! I know I threw a lot of information at you, but don't worry, you'll get the hang of things in no time!

This week we discussed what it means when we say, "America is your Land." Our country is our home, it's the source of our sustenance, it's where we belong. It was given to us by God and preserved for us by generations of our countrymen before us. America is a precious inheritance and we must do our best to be informed, intelligent, responsible citizens who will pass that inheritance on to the next generation, in better condition than that in which we received it.

Here are your assignments for this week:

  • Look through your award requirements and make a written plan to work on those a little bit every week. Memorize big things--like the Declaration of Independence (DoI)--in sections. Instead of playing a game, watch a movie from the list in your free time. Take your books, and your pocket Constitution with you when you have to ride in the car. Use your time wisely, and you'll be able to earn every ribbon!

  • Opinion Paper: What is your responsibility to America and freedom? Think about your responsibility to your family, to your community, and to your country as an American citizen. What does it mean to be a good citizen? What things can you do now, as a youth, that will help you to prepare for the day when the country will be in your hands? Discuss this topic with your family, to help get your ideas flowing. This paper is due at the beginning of the next class. Please use your rubric as a guide, and remember to have a parent/mentor read and initial your paper.

  • Reading: Start reading The Landing of the Pilgrims if you haven't already. Please have it completed by October 21st, and highlight important parts, take notes, and write down insights and questions to be prepared for our book discussion. Please read through the "Steps in Leading a Colloquium" page (14) in your binder. Each of you will get a chance to lead a book discussion this year!

  • Lastly, please watch 1776 (if you haven't yet) and pay close attention to the arguments made by the delegates for and against independence. Did they have good reasons for wanting, or not wanting to break away from England? We will be reenacting this debate in our simulation this Thursday.

One final note:

We will finish signing up for presentations and devotionals this week. If you have any other questions, please email, text or call me, or you can have your parents message me on Band, or you can even comment on this post! See you all in a few days!
