Week 10: What's so Great about George Washington?

Last week, we talked about what made George Washington a great man. Even from a young age, he was considered responsible, mature and sober by his elders, and he was given many opportunities to do hard things, take chances and prove himself. He never shied away from a challenge, and in facing some very tough, and sometimes tenuous situations--like traversing the unexplored countryside as a teenager on a surveying expedition, and leading troops as a young man in the French and Indian War--he was able to learn a lot about his strengths and weaknesses, and how to rely on God in all things.

One unique thing about George Washington was his unyielding desire to have an impeccable reputation of both private and public virtue. As a child, he copied 110 rules of etiquette that he lived by. To read all 110 Rules of Civility a Decent Behavior in Company and Conversation (some of them seem pretty funny to us today, so take them in context!), follow the link below, scroll down to and read the Rules of Civility section, and click the Learn More button.

ASSIGNMENTS:

Writing: What made George Washington a Great Man? You will need to do some research on this one, especially if you haven't read the book, yet, so read some articles about him and see what you can find out...and don't forget to cite your sources in your paper!

Reading: Work on Being George Washington by Glenn Beck, due January 13th.

Presentations: Thank you, Shayla and Austen, for teaching us about how the founders were educated, and about the Boston Tea Party. We'll be pleased to hear from Kyle on Weaponry and Battle Tactics, and possibly from Gavin of the Role of the Navy (???) this week.

Devotional: I forgot to assign it (again!), so I'm hoping Austen will be willing to share a tidbit of enlightenment with us!?

Award Requirements: I'm hoping that every single student will be able to pass off at least ONE thing this week! I know you can do it!

*I will have a substitute filling in for me on Wednesday, so no candy trivia this week.
