Week 4: Unalienable Rights and Vested Rights

Last week we discussed the enumerated (listed) rights and the implicit rights that we hold as American citizens. God gives us natural, or unalienable rights--which means no one can take them from us but Him. These rights were listed in the Declaration of Independence as life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. But, as American citizens, we actually have other rights that fall under these three, but that are a little more specific, such as the right to assemble, the right to bear our own kind, the right to self-defense, and the right to revolt against an unjust government. We learned that the founding fathers did A LOT of studying and discussing on the philosophy of rights in order to give us the best possible guidelines for government. ASSIGNMENTS:

  • Writing: What are your God-given rights? Explain and use examples. Remember to let me know if you discussed the question with your family if you want those bonus points!
  • Reading
    • Read The Midnight Ride of Paul Revere by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (pg. 21 in your binder). Highlight and define any words you are not familiar with--if you're not 100% sure you know he definition of something, look it up! Please use the 1828 Dictionary.
    • Begin reading John Adams: Reluctant Patriot of the Revolution by Leonard Falkner. This must be completed by November 11th.
  • Presentations: Austen will enlighten us on the Boston Tea Party.
  • Devotional: Gavin...you get a second chance! Woot woot!
