Independence...Immediate-Lee!

 Week 2 - October 7th:



Nice job on participating in the Declaration of Independence simulation...I felt like I was right there in Independence Hall with the founding fathers! Now you've all earned your keys, so I'll be handing those out next week. Keep working on those award requirements so you can load up on ribbons!

I really enjoyed discussing Red Scarf Girl with you all and hearing you tell about your insights. (Reading this book the first time really opened my eyes to how different our system of government is compared to so many other systems in the world; I hope it did the same for you!)

Assignments:

  • Writing - What did you learn from the founders by doing the simulation? What did you learn about yourself? How are you going to change because of the simulation? Remember to have a parent/mentor proofread and initial your paper, and discuss the question with your family (like, at the dinner table) for 5 bonus points!
  • Reading - 
    • The Mayflower Compact - (pg.20 in your binder) read it, and highlight and define any words you don't know
    • The Landing of the Pilgrims - we will be discussing this book on October 21st, so take notes, mark quotes, and think of questions/comments to share. One of you lucky ones will be assigned to lead the discussion!
  • Presentations - We will be pleased to hear next week from Savanna on "Life as a Puritan and the Salem Witch Trials," and from Lacey on the "French and Indian War." We look forward to finding out what you  learned!
  • Devotional - Kyle has volunteered to share a recently memorized scripture with us. Thanks, Kyle!
Lastly, you can pass off award requirements to me every week, either before of after class. All you need to do is tell/show me what you've memorized or completed. I'm really excited to start handing out ribbons, so let's get going!

Week 1 (14): A New Form of Government

Welcome to 2nd Semester! This one is my favorite because, even though we have a little more more work to do, we get to learn about how our government affects us today, and what rights and responsibilities we have right now. By the end of this semester, you will know more about this country than even most college students! (Sad, but true!) Please watch the video below with your notes open and write down anything you might have missed in class. Some reminders about what's new this semester: Hero Reports:  This is a written report AND presentation. You need to choose a famous American from the past or present  who is known for promoting the American values of freedom and liberty  (not George Washington, John Adams or James Madison). Week 6: Some Things are Worth Fighting For

This week we talked about what things are worth persevering for. Some of the ideas we heard were family, love, and goals. John Adams believed freedom was worth persevering for, and he never lost sight of that goal, even when he was "the loneliest man in Philadelphia."  Sometimes, fighting for things that are right and true means that you will have to stand alone or take a different, more difficult path than everyone else. We discussed several examples, like Rudy Rudiger, who, against all odds, never gave up his dream to play football for Notre Dame; the pioneer saints who were chased out of one place after another, but who followed the prophet Joseph Smith in all things, despite heavy persecution and loss of fortune and loved ones; and Helga Estby, the woman who walked across America in 1896 to win money to save her family's farm, but came back to a family full of resentment, who would never allow her to speak of her journey again.
